SuperSport Secures Padel Rights

SuperSport has acquired rights to broadcast the Ooredoo Qatar Major 2022 which is part of the Premier Padel, worldwide adel tour. The deal is to initially broadcast this event with a view to getting full tour rights later.

beIN SPORTS has agreed an initial one-year deal to broadcast the 2022 season with the option of extending the deal further. The rights in the US & Canada only include the inaugural Ooredoo Qatar Major 2022.

The beIN SPORTS agreement covers the following territories:

Middle East & North Africa: Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE and Yemen
Asia Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Brunei

Padel is the fastest growing sport across continental Europe, and the rise of padel tennis has been monumental, especially in Spain who record around 6-7 million active players alone. Padel is almost always played in doubles. The courts, about 25% smaller than tennis courts, are surrounded almost entirely by walls, part glass and part metal mesh. Unlike in tennis, the ball remains playable if, after being hit on the ground, it then hits the wall.

Padel is also growing in South Africa. In January 2021, Tennis South Africa accepted the South African Padel Association (SAPA) as an associate member of the Federation and there are now courts across the country where people play.
