Safaricom, the leading telecommunications provider in Kenya, has announced a KES 11 million sponsorship deal for the upcoming Magical Kenya Open golf tournament, which will take place from March 9th to March 12th at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi. As the official technology partner, Safaricom will provide a fully equipped media center, internet connectivity, and communication support to key functional areas, along with devices and airtime.
“We are proud to sponsor the Magical Kenya Open again this year, after successfully taking part in the event last year,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom. “Sports sponsorship is an important area for us because of its ability to uplift and transform lives.”
This year’s tournament will feature over 156 golfers from around the world, including eight Kenyan professionals and six amateurs, with a total prize pool of KES 249 million ($2 million). As part of its commitment to support sporting talent in Kenya, Safaricom will provide additional financial support of KES 1.2 million to six participating Kenyan players.
Safaricom’s sponsorship of the Magical Kenya Open is part of the company’s broader efforts to support sports and nurture talent in Kenya. In February, the telco also sponsored the Magical Kenya Ladies golf tournaments, and last year it launched the Safaricom Golf Tour to grow new talent in the sport across the country.
“We are equally proud to have Safaricom on board as one of our key internet providers to support the media and enable fans to live stream the tournament,” said Patrick Obath, Tournament Director of the Magical Kenya Open. “Last year, we were treated to a thrilling performance by Njoroge Kibugu who raised the Kenyan flag high, and we hope this year it will be no different as we expect an excellent performance from team Kenya.”
The 2023 Magical Kenya Open is part of the DP World Tour and marks the second time the European Tour has been held at the prestigious Muthaiga Golf Club, just one week after the Hero Indian Open.
For Safaricom, this sponsorship deal not only aligns with its values but also showcases its continued commitment to support sports and grow talent across the country.
