A profit sharing agreement has been reached between the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), and the Association of African Sports Confederations for the postponed Africa Games which will now take place in 2024.

Despite being postponed until next year with new dates in March, the African Games will retain the name “Accra 2023”. The Games are now scheduled to take place from March 8 to 23, 2024. According to Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, the executive chairman of the Local Organising Committee, they have agreed to maintain the original name of the event, similar to Tokyo 2020.

An Ad-hoc Technical Committee will oversee preparations for the Games, with representatives from the African Union (AU), the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), and the Association of African Sports Confederations. The Committee will be chaired by AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development Minata Samate Cessouma, with ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf and AASC President Ahmed Nasser Moustafa Kamal Mohamed serving as deputy chairs.

ANOCA and AASC will also receive a percentage of the revenue generated from Accra 2023 marketing and sponsorships. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union. The build-up to the Games has been overshadowed by an economic crisis affecting Ghana, although inflation dropped for the first time in almost two years in January. Despite former Ghana President John Mahama’s call for the event’s cancellation, Ofosu Asare claimed it would cost Ghana just as much not to host the Games as it will to stage them.
