The first season of Betway SA20 has proven to be a success based on the latest data on audience, viewership, and engagement. The 33 matches played during the season were of high quality and entertaining, with six of them being sold out, including the final. The season also saw an impressive 74% of tickets sold across all matches.
Betway SA20 aims to become South Africa’s top sports and entertainment brand. The first season’s data reveals that the league has successfully reached new markets and audiences. In-stadium attendance showed a much younger and more diverse audience, with many families attending a cricket match for the first time. Research conducted by the league also found that fans quickly developed loyalty and affinity for each of the city-based franchise teams. The league enjoyed an 80% positive brand sentiment, which reflects the optimistic view towards South Africa’s premier T20 League.
The league also had a positive social media engagement, with 29 million video views throughout the season, 177.5 million social media impressions, and 13 million social media interactions.
Betway SA20 was broadcast in seven different territories, including Sub-Saharan Africa, India, the UK, Australasia, and the UAE, via SuperSport, Viacom 18, Sky Sports, Fox Sports, and Etisalat, respectively. In South Africa, the league was the most watched sports event on average on SuperSport Premium, with a cumulative viewership of 8.96 million. The league achieved its strategic goal of being a league for everyone, with 46% of the unique audience being female viewers. India, being Betway SA20’s key strategic market, reported 5 billion viewing time minutes, 131 million people reached, and 104 million digital video views.
Graeme Smith, the league commissioner, expressed his gratitude to the franchises, commercial partners, broadcasters, players, and the public for their support and partnership in making the inaugural edition of Betway SA20 a success. He stated that the success of the first season provides a solid foundation as the league prepares for the second season.
